Lisbon, December 11 — Portugal is experiencing its first general strike in 12 years, leading to severe disruptions across the country’s transportation and public service networks. The nationwide industrial action has resulted in complete suspension of Emirates’ operations in Lisbon, major delays in aviation services, and significant challenges for tourists and local commuters.

Emirates Cancels All Dubai–Lisbon Flights Today

Amid widespread staffing shortages and halted services, Emirates has cancelled all scheduled flights to and from Lisbon for the entire day. Four flights stand suspended:

  • EK191 (Dubai → Lisbon)
  • EK193 (Dubai → Lisbon)
  • EK192 (Lisbon → Dubai)
  • EK194 (Lisbon → Dubai)

Passengers booked to connect through Dubai onto EK191 or EK193 are not being accepted for travel at their departure airports, a move intended to protect operational flow and prevent cascading delays.

With no Emirates activity at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport, travellers with direct bookings have been advised to contact Emirates customer service, while those booked via travel agencies must coordinate schedule changes through their agents.

Airline officials indicate that recovery efforts will begin immediately after the strike ends, though full normalisation may take time due to expected backlogs.

Tourism Faces Heavy Impact as Transport Networks Grind to a Halt

Today’s strike has placed immense pressure on Portugal’s tourism sector, especially during a busy travel period.

  • Flight cancellations have disrupted long-planned itineraries.
  • Reduced public transport, including suspended buses, halted port activity, and limited urban transit, affects local sightseeing plans.
  • Unpredictable timetables force tourists to reroute, delay plans, or extend their stays.

Hotels and guesthouses report rising requests for extended accommodations, as travellers wait for clearer updates on transportation resumptions.

For many visitors unfamiliar with the country’s transport systems, the fast-changing situation has created additional stress and confusion, highlighting how deeply tourism depends on stable mobility networks.

Aviation Industry Under Pressure as Unions Join Strike

The general strike has gained strong participation from aviation unions, including cabin crew and ground teams from multiple airlines.

Key operational areas are affected:

  • Ground handling teams are limited.
  • Air traffic personnel shortages have slowed airport operations.
  • Check-in, baggage, and boarding services are functioning at reduced capacity.

Airlines revised schedules early in the day to avoid deeper chaos, yet nationwide slowdowns have still led to extended delays and long queues.

Beyond airports, schools, ports, and local city networks are also shut or operating at minimal levels, creating a ripple effect across daily life in Portugal.

Travellers Navigate a Day of Uncertainty

Passengers currently in Portugal, or travelling today, face a day of constant adjustments. Many have been forced to:

  • Delay their departures
  • Change routes
  • Extend hotel stays
  • Monitor live updates from airlines and transit authorities

Authorities caution that even after the strike ends, full recovery will not be immediate. Transport schedules will need rebalancing, backlogs must be processed, and staffing will take time to return to normal levels.

Travellers are urged to prepare for gradual stabilisation, not instantaneous resolution.
